Q.
What is a VPS?
A.
VPS stands for Virtual Private Server. Basically, a Virtual Private
Server gives you all the benefits of a Dedicated Server, but at
a significant discount. For a detailed explanation, please visit
our What is a VPS? Page.
Q.
Does a VPS allow me to have root access?
A.
Yes.
Q.
Does every VPS plan you offer include root access?
A.
Yes.
Q.
Do I get shell access?
A.
Yes. SSH is included by default.
Q.
I'm not very UNIX-savvy, can I still use a VPS?
A.
Yes. All our VPS plans include an easy-to-use control panel where
you can fully administer your server, without any prior UNIX experience.
Q.
Do you offer a control panel? If so, which kind?
A.
Yes. Our customers get the SW-Soft User CP, along with Usermin and Webmin.
Q.
How fast are your VPSs?
A.
Our VPSs are the fastest in the industry. We run the Virtuozzo Linux
kernel, which provides VPS services within kernel mode, the same
way VPS services are offered on mainframe operating systems that
pioneered this technology.
Anyone claiming
to offer VPS services using, for example, UserMode Linux (UML) or
VMWare, are not offering a true VPS. These systems run the VPS in
user-mode, which takes a significant performance hit since every
system call goes through a user-mode abstraction layer -- that sucks!
We are so confident
that you'll be satisfied with the speed of our VPS services, that
we offer a free trial of our Starter VPS package. Click here
to activate your free trial.
Q.
What hardware do you use?
A.
We run Dell PowerEdge servers exclusively, with the following specifications:
Dual 2.4 GHz
Intel Xeon CPUs
4 GB of RAM
146 GB Dual Ultra SCSI hard drives (in RAID-1 mirror)
Q.
How many web sites (virtual hosts) can I put on a VPS?
A.
As many as your available disk space will allow. We impose no additional
limits.
Q.
How many email accounts can I have on a VPS?
A.
Unlimited.
Q.
Do you offer web-based email (webmail)?
A.
Yep (OpenWebmail).
Q.
Can I have wildcard emails forward to unique addresses for each
domain?
A.
Yes.
Q.
Can I have my own name servers?
A.
Yes. Each VPS currently includes BIND v9.2.1. We will help you register
your new name servers with the registrar of your choice to make
them active for the world. You may serve as many zones as you need.
Q.
How much are extra IPs?
A.
$1.00 per IP, per month.
Q.
How much is extra disk space?
A.
$5.00 per 1 GB, per month.
Q.
What happens if I go over my bandwidth quota?
A.
You are billed a surcharge of $3.00 per GB that you went over. We
do *not* shut off your VPS, or degrade your service in any way.
Q.
What forms of payment do you accept?
A.
Visa, MasterCard, Discover, American Express, and Personal/Company
Check, Money Order or Cashiers Check.
Q.
Can I pay with PayPal?
A.
Not directly. However, a PayPal Virtual Credit Card will work.
Q.
Is it easy to upgrade/downgrade to different plans?
A.
Yes. With just a few clicks, you can change your plan within our
control panel.
Q.
Can I install my own software on a VPS?
A.
Yes, of course. This is one of the beauties of a VPS. You may install
any software that you like.
Q.
Do any of your VPS plans support JRE/JSP and Java Servlets?
A.
Yes, but not by default. You would have to install Jakarta/Tomcat
yourself. We are working right now to make Jakarta/Tomcat a "one-click"
install, like the rest of our applications.
Q.
Does the Miva Merchant application you offer pre-installed for an
additional monthly fee include a Miva license?
A.
Yes. You get everything you need to start building your online store.
Q.
Do I need a merchant account to accept online payments with Miva
Merchant?
A.
Yes. If you do not already have a merchant account, we can set one
up for you. We work with an ISO of Chase Manhattan bank and can
get your merchant account set up within 24 hours. You will also
receive the lowest rates in the industry! If you're interested in this, please call us directly
at 818-565-5679.
Q.
Your VPS services come with a lot of applications already installed.
What happens when it comes time to upgrade those applications, who
does it?
A.
You are subscribed to our free upgrade service by default. We will
upgrade the software automatically for you. Some users prefer to
do it themselves, and that is fine, you may opt-out of the free
upgrade service at any time.
Q.
How are backups handled?
A.
We periodically backup all hardware nodes that run VPSs. Also, our
control panel includes both server-side and client-side backup options.
You may create a full backup of your VPS for yourself, at any time,
and store it on your own hard drive, our our hard drive (and it
won't take up any of your disk quota).
Network
Q.
What kind of network will my VPS live in?
A.
Please see our Network Infrastructure
page.
Q.
Do I have to worry about firewall rules, hackers, etc...?
A.
No. Our network, as a whole, is protected by a Cisco firewall. You
may however, still install your own firewall rules with IPTables.
