| What
is a Virtual Private Server?
A
virtual private server (VPS) provides the same benefits of a dedicated
server at a lower cost. The cost savings comes from not having to
purchase a physical machine or pay monthly fees to lease a dedicated
box. But, from your end, you cannot tell the difference between
a dedicated server and a virtual private server. A VPS provides
root access,
reboot capability,
dedicated (virtual) hard drive with a complete
UNIX (Linux or FreeBSD) filesystem, dedicated memory
(RAM), IP addresses, and much more.
How
is this possible? Easy. In fact, this technology has been available
on mainframe computing systems for over 20 years. The idea was to
buy one very, very powerful dedicated mainframe machine, and to
"slice it up" into many virtual machines, each running
their own operating system. Each customer gets one virtual machine,
which looks, feels and acts like their own dedicated server.
Recently,
technological advances have allowed this same concept to be deployed
on common Linux and FreeBSD systems running on x86 architecture.
We provide the "mainframe" and you buy the virtual machine,
at a significant cost savings to buying a dedicated machine of the
same power.
A
VPS is also commonly known as a Virtual Dedicated Server, or VDS
for short.

Who
can benefit from a Virtual Private Server?
-
Those
who already run dedicated servers
Clients already colocating existing dedicated servers can benefit
from a VPS when it comes time to deploy a service that would
be best suited for a dedicated environment. Not wanting to pay
extra fees for additional rack space for a new server (among
other costs), many clients alternatively deploy the service
on a dedicated server they already lease, adding further load
to the resources of this server, lowering fault-tolerancy, and
complicating the system administration required to keep the
existing services running. Wouldn't it be nice if you could
deploy this service on a fresh new box, but not have to pay
the associated fees and setup time required to install a new
dedicated server? Well, now you can. You are a perfect candidate
for a VPS.

Those
who have never run a dedicated server
If you've never leased a dedicated server or paid for colocation
of your own server, but now need the benefits that these services
provide, consider our entry-level Starter VPS Plan. Not only can
you get started right away, but you can evaluate whether the
service is right for you at no cost. We offer FREE trial accounts here.
